The Department of Music Theory is one of the leading at the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan and occupies an important place in the education and training of professional personnel. The department was founded in 1946.
Every year, highly qualified teachers of the department train specialists – professionals who successfully work not only in music universities, secondary specialized educational institutions of Uzbekistan, but also abroad.
For many years the department consisted of such leading figures of theoretical musicology as Y. Tyulin, Y. Kon, I. Karelova, O. Polikarpov, A. Kotlyarevsky, N. Yudenich, G. Balter.
During the period from 1960 to 1995, the department was represented by such highly qualified and professional personnel as S. Zakrzhevskaya, S. Galitskaya, Yu. Plakhov, M. Kovbas, D. Stern, V. Zudov, L. Koval, E. Matsokina , A. Koralsky, L. Krasutskaya, V. Shapkunova, I. Sotnikova, I. Malmberg, I. Fedorenko, Y. Katz and a promising young generation – N. Kokulyanskaya, Z. Karimova, M. Rosenberg, N. Akhmedkhodzhaeva, F Mukhtarova, A. Azimova, N. Akhundzhanova, S. Khisamova, S. Mirkhodzhaeva, V. Glinsky, S. Matyakubova, L. Bykova.
At that time, the department was headed by I. Akbarov, who made a huge contribution to the development of scientific research and methodological activities. Over the years, the department defended 4 doctoral and 27 candidate dissertations, published monographs, textbooks, anthologies, published scientific and methodological articles. It was during this period that the foundations of research in the field of the theory of monodic culture and composer creativity were laid, which served as the basis and stimulus for further scientific research.
From 1991 to 1996 the department was headed by A. Azimova. A serious scientist, experienced, highly professional teacher, she continued the traditions of I. Akbarov.
From 1996 to 2014, the department was headed by F. Mukhtarova. During this period, young, promising national cadres were invited to the department, who successfully completed their magistracy and postgraduate studies. At the same time, the department published a large number of monographs, textbooks on the courses of harmony (A. Azimova), polyphony (F. Mukhtarova), modern harmony (A. Azimova, Sh. Ibragimova), solfeggio (S. Matyakubova), modal harmony (I. Malmberg), manuals, articles in Uzbek and Russian.
Currently, 14 professors-teachers are working under the leadership of I.M. Mirtalipova in the “Music Theory” department. 3 professors-teachers of the department: A.A. Azimova, Doctor of Art Studies, F.Sh. Mukhtarova, Candidate of Art Studies, S.K. Matyakubova, Candidate of Art Studies, were awarded the scientific title of Professor; 2 teachers: T. Yu. Davydova, candidate of art studies and E. I. Melkumova, candidate of pedagogic sciences, have the title of associate professor. In addition, 7 senior teachers have been demonstrating their pedagogical skills, including N.A. Akhundzhanova, M.A. Radjabova, Sh.E. Ibrahimova, S.M. Makhmudova, Sh.I. Lutfullaeva, N.R. Tursunova, A.A. Kutluchurina. . M.F. Boysinova works as a teacher of the department.
It should be noted that during the 2021-2024 academic year, under the guidance of Professor A. Azimova, I. Mirtalipova received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the field of art studies at the department “Microchromatics. Theory, history and practice”, Sh. Berdikhanova “Rythmic fundamentals of Karakalpak traditional music”, A. Kutluchurina “Faktura v tvorchestve kompozitorov Uzbekistana v kontekte traditsionnogo i sovremennogo muzykalnogo mishleniya v gody nezavisimosti” were successfully defended.
Professor A.Azimova’s “Harmony. “Theoretical course” textbook, “Harmony” 2 parts (for composition and musicology) study guide, “Zvukovoy mir karakalpakov” and “Muzykalnyi traditsionnyi yazyk uzbekskogo, karakalpakskogo i uygurskogo narodov” two fundamental studies “Zvukovoy mir karakalpakov” ‘rgan.
The textbook “Polyphony” written by Professor F. Mukhtarova is one of the educational and methodological achievements of the department.

Docent T.Davidova’s “History of musical style (natsionalnyy stil v usloviyax sovremennosti na primere symfony kompozitorov Uzbeksitana)”, I.Mirtalipova’s “Modern harmony, polyphony and musical form. Instructional manuals entitled “Microchromatics in the compositional creativity of Uzbekistan” are another achievement of the “Music Theory” department.
Today, the department has 1 doctoral student
(DSc), 1 basic doctoral student (PhD), 3 independent researchers are conducting research in various areas of music science. Another independent researcher of the “Music Theory” department, K. Azimov, was recommended to defend his dissertation on the topic “Conductor interpretation of modern Uzbek national operas”.
During the 2020-2024 academic years, more than 20 students are studying at the bachelor’s level assigned to the department, and 5 students defended their master’s theses at the master’s level in the last 5 years.
