THOKASIN JALILOV

(1895-1966)

Thoktasin Jalilov was born in 1895 in the Soyguzar neighborhood of Andijan. In his youth, Uzbek played dutor, tanbur, gjijak and circles from national musical instruments. Kuy learned his lessons from the musicians Orif Toshmatov, Mahmudzhan Usmanov, Maminzhan Jabborov. Tokhtasin Jalilov has not completed any art course from famous artists in Uzbekistan such as Abbas Bakirov, Asad Ismatov, Soybay Khodaev, Khadicha Aminova, Lutfikhonim Sarilokova. With his innate talent, he became a composer of the Uzbek people.

In 1919, the Andijan theatre was founded and one of its founders was Tokasin Jalilov. Tokhtasin Jalilov worked in this theater for 15 years as an artistic director and chief driver.

Tokhtasin Jalilov acted as a singer and songwriter in the propaganda Brigade in 1918-1920. In 1923-1926 he was active in the National Music Circle, in 1919-1929 in the Andijan musical drama theatre.

Tokasin Jalilov composed a national orchestra in the 1930s. He collected Uzbek national instruments such as tanbur, dutor, gjijjak, chang and organized a national orchestra of one hundred people. Tokhtasin Jalilov composed “Otmagay tong” for Orchestra, “O sun” as well as “Blessed are the weddings” for Sobir Abdullah’s poem. In 1934, when the Uzbek musical drama theater was founded in Tashkent, Tokasin Jalilov was invited to work. Jalilov worked in this theater as a music director, artistic director and chief driver. In 1937-1940 he was artistic director in the singing and dance ensemble of the Uzbek State Philharmonic, in 1940-1952 at the Muqimi theater, and in 1965-1966 he served as music director.

Thoktasin Jalilov was married to Malokhat Jalilova. They have four sons and two daughters.

The eldest daughter, Attak Jalilova, is a people’s Artist of Uzbekistan, who played Zuhra in “Toxir and Zuhra”, Zulkhumor in the play “Raqshan and Zulkhumor”.

Sons of peasant Jalilov — an art figure who served in Uzbekistan, popularized — Kholkhoja, the author of such songs as “Aylagach” (Navoi), and the skillful singer Salahiddin Tokhasinov — artists who served in Uzbekistan, younger daughter Khalida Jalilova-singer and educator.

Tokasin Jalilov died in Tashkent in 1966.

During the first Uzbek decadal held in Moscow in 1937, Tokasin Jalilov performed with his national orchestra and was awarded the title “People’s artist of Uzbekistan” in the decadal finale.

Tokasin Jalilov was a gold medalist at the 1935 World Festival of folk dance in London.

The Uzbek folk instrument orchestra of the Uzbek State Philharmonic was named after Thokasin Jalilov in 1967.
