The Department of Music History was founded on the basis of the Faculty of Music and Theory in 1947. An invaluable contribution to the development of the department’s potential, its professional growth, the formation of a scientific and methodological base was made by outstanding scientists and teachers – E.E. Romanovskaya, A.N. Kotlyarovsky, Ya.B. Pekker, I. Karelova, N.F. Orlov, S.M. Veksler, V. Golovina, T.A. Golovyants, N.S. Yanov-Yanovskaya, V.Z. Plungyan, Yu.M. Nosirova and others. Especially important is the role of the musicologist-ethnographer E.Ye. Romanovka, who became one of the founders of the National Conservatory and made an invaluable contribution to the development of Uzbek folklore.

The teaching staff of the department is distinguished by a high level of scientific potential. The Department of Music History has always been at the forefront of music science and pedagogics, and is the initiator of a number of scientific and creative events.

At different times, the department was headed by Ya.B. Pekker, N.F. Orlov, S.M. Veksler, T.B. Gofurbekov, R.Yu. Yunusov, Yu.M. Nosirova, I.G. Galushchenko, G.A. Tursunova, Sh.Sh. Ganikhanova, S.B. Kasimhodzhaeva. All of them cared about preserving the traditions of the department, its high professional level.

Leading musicologists of the republic taught at the department, including I. Dulgarova, M.M. Novikova, F.M. Karomatov, I. Piflaks, Z. Parasko, T.A. Golovyants, N.S. Yanov-Yanovskaya, V.Z. Plungyan, D. Malyan, I. Kachanovskaya, T.S. Rasulova, G.S. Ambartsumova, Z. M. Mirkhaidarova, I.S. Gulzarova, B.Kh. Mukhamedova, A.G. Budarin, E.U. Mamadzhanova, M.F. Abrarova.

Since 2009, the department has been rightfully called the Department of Music History and Criticism, which is a real reflection of its multifaceted activities.

Possessing high scientific potential, the teachers of the department teach special and interdepartmental disciplines.

Today, the Department of the History of Music and Criticism is one of the leading graduating departments, on the initiative of which a number of projects, competitions and festivals are carried out, conferences and round tables are held, textbooks, methodological manuals, collections of scientific articles are published, and active educational activities are carried out. Among the many events initiated by the department, one can name the International Conference “Uzbekistan and Japan: Dialogue of Cultures”, the festival with the support of the European Union “Golden Musical Leaffall”, the publication of a collection of scientific and methodological articles “Yearbook”, general university pedagogical and student conferences.

It can be argued that the scientific potential of GKUz is based precisely on the Department of History of Music and Criticism. Having in its composition 8 candidates of sciences, 1 doctor of art history, the department has the opportunity to conduct discussions of doctoral dissertations. At the moment, 14 doctoral (PhD) and 2 doctoral (ScD) dissertations are being carried out at the department.

From 2018 to the present day, the department has graduated 4 doctors (PhD) and 4 more dissertations have been discussed and recommended for defense.
