The Department of Academic Singing and Opera Training was founded in 1936. Over the years, a significant contribution to the development of vocal art in Uzbekistan was made by the Honored Artist of Uzbekistan S. Benjaminov, N. Kh. Khoshimov, M. R. Rakhmonov, I. Cherneva, R. Chepchirenko, S. Kh. Khodzhaeva, M. I. Rizaeva, M. S. Tazieva, S. Kabulova, A. P. Vlasov and others. Many of them are representatives of the Leningrad and Moscow schools.

It is difficult to find such a department, which in these years included and includes such outstanding personalities who made an enormous, invaluable contribution to the development of the opera, ballet, symphonic art of our republic. Since 1991, People’s Artists of Uzbekistan, professors Saodat Kabulova, Dilbar Abdurakhmanova, Nasim Khashimov, Zakhid Khaknazarov, Firuddin Safarov, Kurkmas Mukhiddinov, Muyassar Razzakova, Ismail Jalilov, and Avaz  Radjabov, Worker of culture of Uzbekistan,  Professor Mukaddas Rizayeva, Doctor of Art History, Professor Marfua Khamidova, Honored mentors of youth of Uzbekistan Professor Vladimir Neymer and senior teacher Galina Eroshina, Honored Art Workers of Uzbekistan, associate professors Gani Tulyaganov and Fazliddin Yakubdzhanov, People’s Artist of Karakalpakstan Aida  Abdullaeva, Honored  Artists of Uzbekistan, associate  professors Roza  Yusupova  and Abdukhalil Abdikadyrov, the greatest professionals in their field, Professor Gulshan Mukhamedova, acting professor Sofya Tsoi, Galina Mukhamedova, associate professor Nodira Kabulova, and many others worked and continue to work to this day at the department.

Since then, the department has done a tremendous amount of work in various fields. Independence brought with it new requirements: first of all, it was necessary to create a new generation of literature: textbooks, manuals, anthologies, to generalize the experience of practical, scientific and methodological, educational work. Of course, the forefront are the masters of their job, the oldest employees of the department.

After the opening of the new building of the conservatory, a new countdown began in the achievements of young opera singers of Uzbekistan at the International vocal competitions of various levels, many of which today have become leading singers in demand at many opera and concert venues around the world. All these victories became possible thanks to the enormous and high-quality, professional, selfless work of the teachers of the department. To organize, interest, teach, captivate, inspire him – this is the task of the teacher, and this task is successfully coped with by the teaching staff of the Department of Academic Singing and Opera Training.

In 2013, the People’s Artist of Uzbekistan and Karakalpakstan, the leading soloist of The State Academic  Theatre named after Alisher Navoi, the owner of the magnificent lyric and coloratura soprano Muyassar Kadyrovna Razzakova, was invited to the Department of Academic Singing and Opera Training as the head of the department. With her arrival, the process of renewal and rejuvenation of the teaching staff of the department has intensified. Singers of the opera theatre were invited to work, such as People’s Artist of Uzbekistan Nurmumin Sultanov, Honored Artists of Uzbekistan Shukur Gafurov, Gulshan Azizova, leading soloists Yanika Bagryanskaya, Nemat Sinhabibi, Anastasia Yudina, Elena Shaverdova, as well as Lola Saidmukhamedova, Djamilya Sindarjva, Rano Yunushodjaeva. After graduating from the master degree, young conductors such as Sukhrob Radjabov, Nilyufar Pardaeva, and director Ulugbek Khaidarov were admitted to the department. Along with the masters working in the department, they gain practical experience of working with students.

Our opera singers and conductors take an active part in various opera festivals, stage performances – whether they are from near or far abroad. This provides an opportunity to exchange practical experience. In turn, outstanding representatives of the operatic art of foreign countries share the secrets of their skills with our musicians – singers, conductors, teachers. An unforgettable meeting was in 2003 in the Great Hall of the Conservatory with the  marvelous opera singer  Elena Obraztsova. She presented a master class with students of the vocal department and was pleasantly impressed by the quality of training of our young singers. The same meetings were and continue with famous musicians from Italy, the USA, Russia, South Korea, Germany, Ukraine, Czechoslovakia, and the geography of these master classes is expanding. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of such an exchange of experience – after such meetings, a certain reassessment of values occurs, new ideas appear, new goals and new tasks are set, that is, a renewal process takes place.

The connection between training and production does not lose its relevance. The primary task is to provide musical theaters, primarily The State Academic  Theatre  named after A. Navoi, with highly professional singers. This is what happens in practice, because now there is no influx of personnel from abroad, as was the case in the past. For many years, the management of the opera house has been accepting graduates of the conservatory into the trainee group, who later become leading soloists. There, on the stage, under the guidance of well-known specialists in the republic, they hone and increase their skills. It is also important that young talents are recognized already within the walls of the conservatory, since many of the singers, conductors and directors of the opera house give their strength and knowledge to young novice singers, teaching them the secrets of mastery. Many graduates teach in music schools, lyceums, in higher educational institutions, many of them join the choirs of the republic, work in various musical groups, houses of culture.

The tradition of promoting new works by Uzbek composers does not stop. Arias, romances and songs that have just been written by the composer are constantly included in the curriculum of students. It often happens that a composer writes directly for a specific performer. In November 2012, a concert was held in the organ hall of the Conservatory, in which arias from the new opera “Alpomish va Oybarchin” and romances by the famous composer Khabibulla Rakhimov were first performed by the students of the vocal department. On March 5, 2013, a large concert “Vocal Works of Contemporary Composers” was also performed by student vocalists. The talent of the young singers and the skill with which they performed new music captivated listeners and authors. The experience of cooperation with the Department of Composition and Instrumentation is interesting: student composers compose vocal works, and student vocalists become their first performers. This kind of competition “For the best vocal composition” among students of the department of composition activates composers and performers to cooperate.

Currently, the department continues to work actively to create a new generation of educational and methodological literature. The issue of providing methodological and professional assistance to teachers and students of musical lyceums and colleges of the republic remains relevant.

The department maintains the tradition of holding class concerts of teachers, as well as department concerts. Leading teachers succeed in this: professors M.K. Razzakova, M.N. Rizaeva, S.A. Tsoi, acting associate professor G.I.Mukhamedova, acting associate professor  E.E. Tursunov, honored artist of Uzbekistan Alexandrova O.A.
