The Department of Academic Choral Conducting has been actively promoting choral art starting from the first years of its existence. The department aims to achieve a higher quality of training the exceptionally qualified choirmasters’ personnel by uniting the staff of the department, as well as using modern technologies and updated educational literature. The students of the department of choral conducting receive extensive knowledge in the field of choral art. They are as follows: mastering the technique of conducting, practical work skills, historical and theoretical material, modern means and techniques of arrangement, reading choral scores, methodological principles of choral pedagogy. The graduates of the department successfully work with professional musical groups, in colleges, lyceums, in children’s music schools and with amateur groups.

The Department of Choral Conducting came into existence in 1944. Since that time a new stage of the development of Uzbek choral performance has started, in other words – the formation of the conductor-choral educational system in Uzbekistan.

Professor M.N. Semenov an honored art worker of the Uzbek SSR was the organizer and its first head of the department. Over the years, V. Veselova, Z. Ievskaya, A. Pavlinova, the chief choirmaster of the Sverdlov Opera and Ballet Theater, N. Priselkov, graduate of the Leningrad Conservatory, and V. Knyazyatov worked at the department. Soon thereafter, L. Shamshin – choirmaster of the Theater and Ballet (the first graduate of the conductor-choral department), E. Kenzer, I. Kalnitskaya, S. Valenkov, A. Vasilyeva, E. Gudkova, E. Melik-Karamyan, R. Khublarov, V. Kaltman, E. Nechaev, M. Polonsky were invited to work.

In 1960-70s, the department was replenished with young graduates who proved themselves most vividly during the years of their study. They are B. Umedzhanov, N. Kaziev, M. Azimov, S. Shadmanov, Sh. Ruziev, S. Makhmudova, N. Bakhritdinova, A. Khakimova, L. Dzhumaeva, N. Sharafieva, B. Shamakhmudova, I. Chernikova, T. Mamikonyan.

The teaching staff of the department currently consists of the candidate of art history, professor – A. Khakimova, professors – L. Dzhumaeva, N. Sharafieva, N. Bakhritdinova, B. Shamakhmudova, associate professors – S. Kadirova, Y. Khusnitdinova, acting associate professors – T. Mamikonyan, B. Shakhnazarova, senior assistant professor – M. Aripova, D. Matsinova, E. Shokarimova, assistant professor G. Avkhadieva.

Part-time staff represented by associate professor G. Mansurova, teacher H. Imamova, soloists of the State Academic Theater named after A. Navoi, R. Smirnykh, A. Yudina, R. Khasanov.

The particular importance of the department has been attached to the educational and concert activities of the students’ choir of the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan. The choir is led by: professor L.Kh.Dzhumaeva, associate professor S.P. Kadirova, choirmasters, senior assistance professor N. Shokarimov, assistance professor G. Avkhadieva. Over the years of independence, the trend of students’ participation in a number of international projects has developed (it was carried out with the assistance of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the embassies of Germany, France, the USA, Israel, Russia) .

The choir performs on a regular basis the works of such composers as M. Burkhanov, B. Umedzhanov, S. Babaev, S. Yudakov, M. Ashrafi, M. Bafoev, R. Abdullaev, H. Rakhimov, F. Yanov-Yanovsky, D. Amanullaeva, O. Abdullaeva, P. Medyulyanova and others.

Thus, the department of choral conducting constitutes the center of the choral life of the Republic. It actively influences the growth of choral performance, constantly seeks new forms and methods of popularizing polyphonic choral singing, and determines the ways for the further development of the choral art of Uzbekistan.
