The Department of “Musical Oriental Studies” was founded in 1972. The department was headed by Doctor of Arts, Professor Faizulla Karamatov. Since the founding of the department, the main tasks have been the following: preservation and development of traditional music, mastering the skills of traditional singing and instrumental performance, training oriental musicians fluent in oriental languages.

The establishment of folk music classroom has significantly improved the quality of education. Doctor of Arts, professor I. Rajabov, professor A. Jabbarov, F. Sadikov, R. Rajabi, T. Inogomov, M. Mukhammedov, S. Tahalov, O. Alimakhsumov, Z. Oripov, Z. Nasullaev, K. Avasenov, young teachers O. Matyakubov, R. Abdullaev were invited for conducting lessons. A little later, R. Yunusov, A. Khoshimov, A. Nazarov, O. Ibragimov, S. Begmatov began their teaching activities.

In recent years, professors and teachers of the department have published more than ten textbooks, tutorials and teaching aids.
