Department of “Composition and Instrumentation” (acting Head H. Tursunova) takes an active part in the educational and creative life of the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan. Her history is closely connected with the formation of the country’s school of composition and the rise of Uzbek musical culture to the world level, and the milestones of her biography coincide with the main stages of development of the university, of which she is the same age.
The Department of Composition was established in 1936 on the basis of the merger of two departments – music history and music theory. This triumvirate was headed by the famous musicologist, Honored Artist of Uzbekistan, associate Professor E. E. Romanovskaya until 1947. In 1947, at the initiative of M. A. Ashrafi, the musicology department was divided into two: the Department of Music Theory and Composition was headed by Doctor of Art History, Professor Yu. N. Tyulin, and the Department of Music History by E. E. Romanovskaya. Each of them has its own history and numerous achievements. The work of the composition department was devoted to the education and training of composers. Thus, the effective activity of its teachers made it possible to solve the problem of professional composer education in the republic, to prepare a large group of composers.
Over the years, the members of the department were outstanding masters, including B. B. Nadezhdin, B. I. Zeidman, A. F. Kozlovsky, G. A. Mushel, B. F. Gienko and others. By the early 50s, the Department of Composition had become an independent creative department. It was headed by a great musician, Honored Artist of Uzbekistan, laureate of the Khamza State Prize, composer, conductor, Professor A. F. Kozlovsky. After Alexey Fedorovich, the department was headed in different years by: B. F. Gienko, F. M. Yanov-Yanovsky, S. D. Jalil, A.M. Mansurov, A. A. Hashimov, O. U. Abdullayeva, N. I. Erkaev.
Later, the Department of Composition (unfortunately, the exact date is unknown) was merged with the Department of Instrumentation. The expediency of this decision was explained by the fact that most of the teachers of the instrumentation department for many years conducted the main disciplines of the academic cycle at the composition department. This association has certainly strengthened the position of the Department of Composition, because over the years of its existence, the Department of Instrumentation has become an authoritative scientific and methodological center in the field of the art of instrumentation and arrangement, which is the undisputed merit of its teachers.
The traditions laid down by the luminaries were developed by their students, who later became part of the teaching staff – F. Yanov-Yanovsky (from 1979-1986 he was head of the Department of Composition and Instrumentation), R. Vildanov, M. Tajiev, T. Kurbanov, S. Varelas and many others. They were active in their own work, which had a beneficial effect on their teaching work.
To date, the teaching staff of the department, while preserving its traditions, actively contributes to raising the banner of the Uzbek school of composition and popularizing this rich musical culture both inside and outside the country. The main direction of her activity, as before, is the education and training of the composing profession in all its areas, including instrumentation, arrangement (including computer). The teachers of the department conduct serious scientific and methodological work: these are curricula and lecture courses on the main special subjects: composition, instrumentation, reading scores, polyphony, harmony, musical form, solfeggio, instrumentation and others. They are being developed taking into account current trends in world composing practice.
Outstanding composers of the country are engaged in educational activities and work with students, including professors M. Bafoyev, R. Abdullaev, M. Mahmudov, O. Abdullayeva, A. Varelas, A. Mansurov, H. Tursunova, associate professors J. Shukur, D. Kamilova, A. Khasanov, senior teachers, N. I. Erkaev, Sh. Sobirov, teachers F.Akramov, S.Narturaeva, M.Turazhonov and others.
The activity of the department is multifaceted. In addition to the educational process, teachers and students take an active part in organizing and conducting concerts, competitions and festivals at both the national and international levels. In addition, there is a lot of scientific activity: students regularly make presentations at scientific and practical conferences, and the teaching staff conducts scientific and methodological work, preparing and releasing methodological and teaching aids for schools, colleges and universities of the country.
